Digitalis purpurea (Scrophulariaceae)AppearanceOne of the taller herb garden plants, the foxglove attains from 1 to 2m (3? to 6?) in height and provides an early to midsummer flower show. It has tongue-shaped, deeply veined, soft and dark green attractive foliage, but its real crowning glory is its hanging steeple of purple/red bell-like flowers with a spotted inner face. HistoryThe stuff of mystery novels and intrigue, the Foxglove has an ancient provenance; it certainly goes back at least as far as the Anglo-Saxons. Its virtue of as a cardiological regulatory measure was only recognised by a Dr. Withering in the 18th century. the venerable Gerard counted it as one of his essential herb garden plants and recommended it as a poultice for severe bruising and external wounds. The migration to the New World of Foxglove was only accomplisher after the virtues involving the heart were recognised and publicised. Truly a wonder drug of the day, with its toxicity making it a Jekyll and Hyde amongst herb garden plants. UsageThe cardiac glycosides extant in and obtained from Foxglove are used therapeutically in the treatment of cardiac failure, because of their anti-arrhythmic effects. As far as we can establish, no commercial synthetic drug has yet successfully superseded the cardiac glycosides that are obtainable from the foxglove and a few other sources. In spite of its extreme toxicity to man, its virtues give it an overweening importance as an absolutely essential healing medicinal herb. Other sources of cardiac glycosides: Plants. Strophanthus â?? ouabain Digitalis lanata â?? digoxin, digitoxin Nerium oleander â?? oleandrin Animals. Bufo toads CultivationThe Foxglove it is a true biennial â?? its rosette of leaves is forms during the first year and the flower spike the second; thereafter the plant dies, but leaves a legacy in the form of a brood of offspring around it. It has been observed that a late-season rosette may hang in there for the second year and flower in the third. Foxglove grows easily from seed, and once established there will always be some offspring about, in fact the Foxglove has a set pattern of broadcasting its seed to populate its patch with successive generations. Good rich soil with leaf mould makes the Foxglove a happy plant â?? although dappled shade tolerant, it prefers siting in full sun. A winter mulch of pine needles should be applied after the ground has frozen. Plants living in damp soil should be transferred to growing frames during winter for Spring replanting.

Origanum onites (Labiatae)Appearance: Marjoram is one of the bushier herb garden plants reaching some 60 cms (2 ft) in height. Marjorams have a pleasant and distinct aroma. Pot marjoram is somewhat stronger and it is one of the most popular of the cultivated herbs, flourishing in temperate climes. Flowers are pink and white in  summer. Usage: Flowers and leaves can be used for potpourris. A favourite culinary herb with many uses in stews, soups and stuffings. History: Many people get confused about marjoram. Before the Second World war common marjoram (O. vulgara), redâ??stemmed perennial herb garden plants which spread by means of small rhizomes were dubbed wild marjoram in most American cookbooks. Modern cookbooks refer to it as Oregano. To compound this confusion, some Southern states refer to unrelated herb garden plants as marjoram. Look at the picture to be sure. Sweet or marjoram is a native of North Africa. It likes temperate climates: in Summer it has purple/blue flowers mixed in with leaves ballooning at the stem tips. The the untidy knotted appearance gives it the nickname of knotted marjoram. Widely regarded as the best flavour for cooking. Cultivation: Pot or wild marjoram grows well from seed sown in spring, summer cuttings or root division in autumn (fall). Sweet marjoram needs to be treated as a half hardy annual. All kinds of marjoram herb garden plants can be started by sowing indoors or in cold frames early in spring, and are ready to transfer when the thermometer reads around 10deg C. or 50deg F. Harvesting: Pick straight off the stems. All the marjorams dry well for winter use.

After the recent losses, Wings all their fans at Detroit Red Wings Playoff need to purchase tickets and rooting for their teams away from home. Wings to let it be known that they have an abrasive. But they were moments away from winning the Stanley Cup before the Penguins pulled even late in the game. Red Wings have started celebrating a little early, and therefore they can make the flight back to Pittsburgh for the last time the wings have proven that they win in Pittsburgh, but the Penguins have given just a little too much Living in the series. The pins certainly earned their last home game of the season, played in triple-OT in Detroit, before they finally deserved cleansing one with his back against the wall to win. If the pins can only win one game at home, then back to Detroit for game seven. If the Penguins win at home to force a decisive game seven? Or will the Red Wings win Cup on the road? Youâ? Ll get your Detroit Red Wings playoff tickets in order to find out.
Â
Red Wings knew that the Stanley Cup slipping out of hands. They were on their way to true greatness, and they were completely the wrong time to be complacent. What? S even worse, making a mental lapse of Chris Osgood was hurt, and they have cost the game. Now Red Wings returned to Pittsburgh more time with the big issues. After just playing with such a tough match-up, have the older groups know that their opponents have all the advantages. And what makes Red Wings do? They play their hearts in Pittsburgh, where every minute, as if their lives depend on them in an attempt to stop this marathon for the championship? Or they take away the night to give the Pens a win, and go back to Joe Louis Arena rested and ready for the Stanley Cup? Can they take the chance? If only revive a victory for the Penguins? Game six, if full of questions to the Red Wings.
Â
The Penguins, who played for all young people, as masters of the game five. With their backs against the wall, played the young pens from her heart and she gave all that Detroit is. They have fought not only against the Red Wings, but they battled adversity, and a ruthless band of his own inexperience in this game. Wings came out to an early lead, but the Penguins could not give up, and they fought all the way back. Every time you tried to squeeze them out of the game, steel pins set their reserve and came back more focused. And just when it seemed that the young team to come a bit too short, they found the magic it needs. In overtime, they simply survive the older Detroit team. They played a 35 + minutes before a winner was decided hockey. With this kind of dent in the confidence game six, should Penguins lose.

Damascus Steel is a broad category of metallurgical techniques used to make higher technology knives and sword blades in the 12th through 18th centuries.   Prior to the Bessemer process which allows steel to be made in large quantities with exact control over the amount of carbon in the mix, steel was made in an artisanal method – it was made in small batches, and making a batch large enough to make a sword was a technical challenge.

Steel is iron with carbon impurities; the best time to mix in the carbon impurities is when the steel is hot.   The archetypal image of a blacksmith striking sparks from a red hot steel blade that we see in movies and popular culture stems from needing to distribute the carbon (from coke or charcoal) through the blade.   You’d hammer the steel while it’s glowing hot, turn the blade over, hammer it again, and reheat.   The aim of doing this was to make sure that the carbon granules were broken to the right size in the alloy.   (Modern steel making allows much greater precision than merely hammering the nodules out).   The more carbon there is in the steel, the harder it is, and the more rigid the steel is.

Damascus steel, in spite of the mythologies that have built up around it, was simply a technique of taking high carbon steel ingots (usually “wootz” steel imported from India), hammering or drawing them flat, and then putting a layer of charcoal over them, then a layer of higher nickel alloy steel over it (nickel keeps steel flexible), then hammering them together, often times trying to fold the steel back so that there’s a pattern of high carbon steel (providing rigidity) and softer nickel steel (maintaining flexibility and the softness needed to sharpen the weapon with period tools).

Damascus steel shows a distinctive pattern – the high carbon steel is darker than the nickel steel, and there’s a pattern of cells that can look almost like snakeskin or running water through the blade, as the hot blade is quenches in pickling brine.   (This brine will tarnish the high carbon steel before the nickel steel).   Similar patterns can be found in pattern-welded steel swords from Northern Europe and the “folded steel” swords of the Japanese, both of which have been mythologized (as has Damascus steel) into weapons that can cut rock, bodies and machine gun barrels.

Damascus steel fell out of fashion for two reasons.   The first is that it’s incredibly labor intensive to make, and the second was that with the Bessemer process, modern steelmaking allowed for comparable steels at a fraction of the cost.   Indeed, the leaf springs in a typical automobile or light truck can be ground down to make better swords than ever existed in antiquity in terms of quality and ability to hold an edge.
