Winners And Losers At The 2009 Oscar Awards

Wow there were some fantastic dresses at this year’s Oscars and what a variety!  There were a lot of fairy tale ball gowns on display, but also some shorter cocktail styles, vintage and “goddess” dresses.   As usual some celebrities were spot on and others didn’t fare so well.   I will start with the winner of Best Actress, Kate Winslet.   She certainly deserved the award and she is such a beautiful woman, she looks pretty good in most things but I was disappointed to see her in black. . . . again!  Not only was the dress unflattering in colour, it was also not great in style for Kate.   I have seen her looking so much better, what a pity she was so ill advised on such a momentous occasion.     Marion Cottilard opted for the ball gown with little success.   Her dress was over large and black, and although it made her waist look tiny, she look as though she was wearing a tight corset and this was compounded by the expression on her face suggesting  that she could barely breath!  In contrast Penelope Cruz really did look fabulous in her cream, lacy number whose only downside was that it did look a bit like a wedding dress.   However Penelope somehow carried it off and she did look lovely.   Beyonce Knowles has a lovely curvy figure and the dress she wore should have suited her but somehow it didn’t quite work.   The fabric was too heavy and the pattern too big, thus giving her the appearance of greater width than she really is.   A more fluid fabric and a smaller pattern would have made all the difference.   Freida Pinto looked gorgeous in her dress (although I think she would have been better in a “warmer” blue).   She was right on trend with the asymmetric neckline and the combination of beading and the fluidity of the dress suggested a mix of western and eastern styles which was so appropriate.   Marisa Tomei looked fantastic in the shapely white dress she was wearing; I just think she could have gone for some colour to really accentuate her colouring.   White is a colour that Marisa can wear but how much better she could have looked if her dress had been a clear red, purple or turquoise.    Her natural colouring needs some strength of colour to really flatter her beauty.   The shape was elegant yet showy and displayed her slim and shapely figure to great effect.     I would give her first prize.

Tgs 2009 – Red Steel 2

Red Steel 2

The long awaited results of this year’s BAFTA awards and the ceremony to present them has been and gone for another year but still the conversation is on what the stars wore as they proceeded up  the red carpet at the Royal Opera House.  This year there were many more black dresses than recent years; could this be due to the current economic climate?   There was a huge range of styles worn by the celebrities to different degrees of success and while some look fabulous in the dresses they wore, others have done better in the past! Starting with the black clad brigade of which there were many, Angelina Jolie and Penelope Cruz both looked stunning.   Both women have “Deep” colouring which means that black is in their colour pallet.   I particularly liked the splash of yellow (a hot colour for this season) in Angelina’s dress.   The only criticism I would make of Penelope Cruz’s dress was the high neck line.   It made her shoulders look bigger than they really are. Kate Winslet and Emma Watson were also wearing black which could be overpowering for their colouring, but they both wore plunging necklines so the black wasn’t too near their faces.   Emma’s dress was particularly stunning with the gold detail around the neck line.   Kylie Minogue and Goldie Hawn were less successful in black.   Kylie’s “Soft” colouring would have been enhanced with a softer colour but again the low neckline helped.   Goldie is blonde and over sixty so black is too harsh for her.   A softer grey would have been more flattering. Emilia Fox is much too small and frail looking for the heavy black dress with a long train which overpowered her in size and colour. Freida Pinto a pale pink dress that was not the most flattering colour for her “deep” colouring although it was lovely to see some colour and the dress was a lovely shape to show off her curves, she needs something stronger and darker.   Laura Bailey was the height of fashion with lots of ruffles and bright colouring but sadly not the right colour for her either and Amy Adams wore a blue dress that was a perfect shape for her body but the wrong colour for  her auburn hair.   A warmer shade of blue would have been more flattering. Kirstin Scott Thomas looked truly amazing in her black and royal blue dress; she is a woman who knows how to dress glamorously.   Her “Clear” looks are mirrored perfectly by this stunning dress.   For me, it was Sharon Stone who stole the show.   She wasn’t the youngest woman present by any means but she looked amazing in a stunning red dress that enhanced her natural colouring and showed off her fabulous figure.
