Even if your wedding day is not for several months, now is the time to start planning your make-up for the day. Plenty of practice is needed to achieve a perfect look and it is worth getting some professional advice on colours that suit you naturally. Some brides like to have their make-up applied by a professional but others prefer to do their own. If you follow the advice below, you should be able to achieve a perfect look with minimum of effort. I) Ensure that you cleanse tone and moisturise regularly twice a day in the months that run up to the wedding. It can be a stressful time and may show in your skin if you don’t look after it. Try and avoid fatty food and stick to a healthy diet full of fresh fruit and vegetable. Zinc is good for the skin and can be found in nuts and seeds. On the morning of the wedding, make sure you have cleansed, toned and moisturised at least two hours before applying your make-up. II) A smooth “pallet” is the next step. Use a primer to even up the skin tone. If you are prone to redness, apply mint adjuster all over the face, then neutral adjuster under the eyes to cover up any dark circles. Use concealer on any prominent blemishes. It is also a good idea to put some eye base on the eyelids rather than foundation. The eye area is very delicate and can be damaged easily. Eye base acts like a primer for eyes and is moisturising and protective. III) Now apply foundation. Use a damp sponge for a smooth finish and start in the centre of your face working outwards, towards the hair line. It is vital to find a foundation that matches your skin tone closely and ensure that you don’t leave a line around your chin giving you a “mask” effect. IV) Now apply loose powder. This may not be something you usually do, but it will be a long day and the powder will help to “set” the foundation and keep it in place. Apply liberally and brush the excess off with a soft brush. V) Use a soft eye pencil in a flattering shade and apply close to the lash line. Use a neutral colour eye shadow over the whole eyelid and a slightly darker shade as an accent on the outside corners. Blend together. Try and use colours that are subtle and not too bright. Now apply two coats of mascara in either brown (for blondes, red heads and light brunettes) or black/brown (for dark hair). Waterproof mascara may be necessary, particularly if you are an emotional type! Alternatively, get your eye lashes tinted and use clear mascara. This is particularly effective on women with long thick eyelashes. VI) Now apply blusher. Again use a colour that suits your skin tone and be economic with your application. Just use the colour to gently contour your face. VII) Finally lipstick. Make sure your lips are soft and smooth. Again, this requires preparation in the months running up to the wedding by keeping your lips moisturised and exfoliated. Apply a lip base for added moisture retention and a smooth base. Use a natural coloured lip pencil to outline your lips and then apply two layers of lipstick in a soft colour that suits you. Just remember, keep calm (bach’s rescue remedy can help), allow plenty of time and find somewhere quiet and uncluttered and you can achieve that perfect fresh and natural look you have always dreamed of.

Safari is back with avengence this spring and summer, so why not update last year’s look with a few carefully choosen editions. It is important to choose the right shades and shapes to get the best look. Shop around until you find the right styles for you. The earthy, natural colours are perfect for “Softs”, which can blend different shades of the same colour to get the perfect look. Look out for sand, taupe, beige, cream, stone, coffee brown and chocolate. If you want to go wild, how about adding a bit of muted animal print? Safari isn’t exclusively for “Softs”; other groups can manipulate the safari look by adding different colours. “Lights” can wear the lighter safari colours, such as sand or cream and team them with pastels. Pink or pale apricot and sand or taupe can be stunning on a blonde. These colours will not over power your light colouring. “Warms” will look very up to date matching orange or warm red with khaki or taupe. The yellow undertones of the orange will give warmth to the neutral colours and enhance your natural colouring. “Cools” need to keep to neutral colours, mixed with colours that have a blue undertone. Pink and taupe, as I mentioned earlier look great but for “cools” the colours need to be stronger. “Deeps” will look fabulous in dark chocolate brown put together with pewter and a dark sand or a deep rich red. As long as the colours are dark and not pastel, they will look stunning. “Clears” look their best in contrasting colours, so make sure the neutrals you choose are on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example dark chocolate brown, with pale sand or black/brown with cream. Zebra print could be an amazing look. Now you have the colours sorted, what about the designs? Which styles will suit your body shape? The safari theme is perfect for “Lean Columns” with all the pocket detail around the hips and bust. “Hourglasses” can show their lovely waists off, by belting in jackets, but beware of too many pockets if you have a “full hourglass” figure, they can add inches to your silhouette. “Triangles” can maximise their narrow shoulders with plenty of detail on the top half, but remember to avoid pockets around the hips on the trousers or skirt. “Rectangles” will look great in safari inspired trousers and skirts with pockets but need to avoid belted jackets. “Inverted Triangles” can have detail on their narrow hips but need to minimise bulk around their shoulders. Check your wardrobe to see what you already have, then using the advice above, buy one or two new items to mix and match with items currently in your wardrobe. This will mean you can update your wardrobe without a huge outlay but know you are still up to date and looking good.

The long awaited results of this year’s BAFTA awards and the ceremony to present them has been and gone for another year but still the conversation is on what the stars wore as they proceeded up the red carpet at the Royal Opera House. This year there were many more black dresses than recent years; could this be due to the current economic climate? There was a huge range of styles worn by the celebrities to different degrees of success and while some look fabulous in the dresses they wore, others have done better in the past! Starting with the black clad brigade of which there were many, Angelina Jolie and Penelope Cruz both looked stunning. Both women have “Deep” colouring which means that black is in their colour pallet. I particularly liked the splash of yellow (a hot colour for this season) in Angelina’s dress. The only criticism I would make of Penelope Cruz’s dress was the high neck line. It made her shoulders look bigger than they really are. Kate Winslet and Emma Watson were also wearing black which could be overpowering for their colouring, but they both wore plunging necklines so the black wasn’t too near their faces. Emma’s dress was particularly stunning with the gold detail around the neck line. Kylie Minogue and Goldie Hawn were less successful in black. Kylie’s “Soft” colouring would have been enhanced with a softer colour but again the low neckline helped. Goldie is blonde and over sixty so black is too harsh for her. A softer grey would have been more flattering. Emilia Fox is much too small and frail looking for the heavy black dress with a long train which overpowered her in size and colour. Freida Pinto a pale pink dress that was not the most flattering colour for her “deep” colouring although it was lovely to see some colour and the dress was a lovely shape to show off her curves, she needs something stronger and darker. Laura Bailey was the height of fashion with lots of ruffles and bright colouring but sadly not the right colour for her either and Amy Adams wore a blue dress that was a perfect shape for her body but the wrong colour for her auburn hair. A warmer shade of blue would have been more flattering. Kirstin Scott Thomas looked truly amazing in her black and royal blue dress; she is a woman who knows how to dress glamorously. Her “Clear” looks are mirrored perfectly by this stunning dress. For me, it was Sharon Stone who stole the show. She wasn’t the youngest woman present by any means but she looked amazing in a stunning red dress that enhanced her natural colouring and showed off her fabulous figure.
